Designer of the Week: Cynthia Rowley

Cynthia Rowley

Cynthia Rowley was seven when she constructed her first dress. As a senior at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, she sold her first collection of eight pieces to a number of New York’s most prominent stores.

Since then, the Cynthia Rowley Collection has grown beyond women’s wear to include beauty, baby, bicycles,  bridesmaids, active-wear, home sewing patterns, tools, handbags, shoes, legwear and shapewear. The Collection is sold in better department, specialty and online stores, as well as in approximately 60 Cynthia Rowley shops around the world.

The Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) honored her with the prestigious Perry Ellis Award for Womenswear and recognized Cynthia again with a nomination for New Menswear Design Talent.

A broad range of targeted media has aided Cynthia Rowley in reaching a large national and international audience. Cynthia has appeared on numerous TV shows including the ‘Late Show with David Letterman,’ ‘Oprah,’ ‘Good Morning America,’ ‘Today,’ and more. She regularly appears as a guest judge on ‘Project Runway’ and ‘Design Star.’ Editorial coverage consists of features in nearly every major magazine domestically and internationally, including Vogue, Elle, W, Harper’s Bazaar, Glamour, The New York Times, Elle Décor, In Style and Vogue Paris.

Cynthia is a bestselling author of the Swell series and has five books to date; her most recent, Slim: A Fantasy Memoir, was published by Rizzoli and includes her original drawings.

Cynthia is a mother to two daughters and is married to Bill Powers, co-owner of Half Gallery on the Lower East Side and judge on Bravo’s competition series “Work Of Art.” In her free time she enjoys many death-defying adventures, including surfing, waterskiing and scuba diving. Cynthia is an admirer of contemporary art and an avid art collector.  She is on the board of RxArt, an organization dedicated to placing art in hospitals and healing environments. Their latest project for 2010 is with Jeff Koons at Advocate Hope Hospital in Chicago. (About)

An Insider’s Look at the Victoria Secret Fashion Show After Party

Its my favorite time of year, and every december I look forward to watching the Victoria Secret Fashion show, which airs tonight at 9/10c on CBS. Well, a lucky writer for BettyConfidential shared her experience at the after runway party:

“Carrie Seim tries to feel sexy surrounded by models at a Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show party.

“I’m at a Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show party!!” I texted my mom last week.

As a purportedly hip bicoastal writer, I’m supposed to appear unimpressed at occasions such as these. I’m supposed to look like I do this sort of thing all the time, that it’s nothing more than a regular Tuesday night for me.

But despite my “on trend” embellished black skirt, the 4-inch heels I was tottering on and the pleasantly bored expression in which I had fixed my face – inside I was a giggling star-struck tween.

I admit it. I was pretty much OMFG happy to be there. And who else but your mom can you text that to?

The scantily-clad fashion show, airing tonight on CBS, taped a few days ago in New York. The official party I attended took place a stone’s throw from the runway, and although I wasn’t in the audience for the show, I had the pleasure of being surrounded by insanely tall women with insanely perfect figures all night long.

“It’s a 6′ tall skinny women w/ big boobs convention here!” I texted my mom.

To which she responded …. drum roll please….

“With your long arms u will fit right n.”

My long arms??? Wind from sails – gone.

A compliment on your lengthy arms is not exactly what every girl clamors for as a confidence boost. (Although give mom credit for the cool text speak. She’d fit right “n” on Gossip Girl.)

You should know that my mother would never purposely criticize my ample appendages in order to make me feel self-conscious. She honestly meant it as a compliment. And to be fair, I do have crazy long arms. Unfortunately, I’ve always wished my well-endowed body parts fell in a different place. It’s pretty rough when your mom’s the one reminding you of your ungainly proportions WHILE YOU’RE AT A VICTORIA’S SECRET PARTY.

As well adjusted as I am, it was surprisingly easy to lose my mojo at a model party. It’s bad enough when Heidi Klum’s strutting down the runway like an enchanted mom-stress, lithe and perfect just a few weeks after giving birth. Or when those skinny young things glide down the catwalk in the exact same bra you bought from Victoria’s Secret a few weeks ago, only to discover, Oh, that’s what it’s supposed to look like…

But when the gorgeous women are literally in the same room with you, how can you gather the fortitude to exude confidence and sexiness?

I felt like a crabapple sapling lost in a mighty Redwood forest.

And worst of all, I was there all by myself.

Read He Called Me Fat!

So what did I do? Slip out the back door? Nah, too easy. Hide in the bathroom? The models might figure out how to follow me in there. Drink a few too many “model inspired” Stoli mixed drinks to drown my insecurity? I’m not that kind of – okay, okay, maybe two or three.

I gathered my courage and imagined what my mom would say if she were with me (I’d already cut her off from texting that night). I heard her sweet voice in my ears:

1. Shoulders back, arms long! (Kidding.)

2. You’re beautiful! Now go put on a little lipstick and blush.

3. Smile! And go talk to the person in the room who looks lonelier than you.

Turns out the loneliest looking person in the room that night happened to be a hot guy sitting all by himself.

I smiled. He smiled. I introduced myself. He introduced himself. I sat in a manner designed to show off my flowing arms. He sat in a manner designed to show off his man purse. (Okay, so maybe he was gay. Or possibly European!)

But still, it was me – not any of those long legged models – who traded phone numbers with him!  I have my long arms crossed that he’ll call me this week. And who knows, maybe I’ll get up the courage to call him first.

In fact, I’m going to text my mom right now to get her advice. I’m guessing it’ll be along the lines of: “Go 4 it, long arm silver!”
