Quick Style Guide: Chic Jackets

Cooler weather is finally here and that means jackets are finally needed. What says more about your outfit than the topper.  A jacket is one of the easiest ways to be chic with little to no effort.  Meaning if you’re running to the grocery store, to pick up the kids, or just a bunch of errands, you’re probably not going to take off your jacket/coat.  Throw on one that’s sassy enough and you’re done.  Wear it with whatever, no one will notice cause your jacket is so cute!

So drop the North Face, the Adidas and the puffer and let’s find so chic ones!

Lighter Weight Jackets

I prefer alot of light weight jackets because it doesn’t get really frigid here.  Thus, jersey/knit jackets are some of my faves!

I actually own this blue one on the right and wear it all the time. It is so easy to throw on and look instantly put together! No assembly required!

Coats

Choose a vibrant color.

Try a print. (animal, plaid, stripes, houndstooth)

Pick something that’s got detailing.  (double breasted, outside pockets, nipped in at the waist, piping)

Choose fun buttons. (latches, large circles, square, or big gold ones)

See how easy it is to throw on a cute jacket and look great?  What does your winter jacket/coat look like?

And just for fun….check out this awesome cape that P.S. I Made This actually MADE!

Quick Style Guide: Transitioning to a Texas Fall

Technically, fall is here. But with temps still in the high 80′s it sure doesn’t feel like fall.  The cool mornings and hot afternoons make it hard to dress.  While we can’t break out the big knit sweaters just yet, here are few tips to take your wardrobe into fall without sweating like a maniac.

  • Switch to your darker wash denim.

Light denim screams summer.  By switching to a dark wash, you’ll feel more fallish without any real change.

*Wide leg/flare jeans are huge for fall!! When paired with wedges or closed-toed heels, you’re completely on trend*

  • Wrap around a light scarf to your jeans and tees combo.

Throw on a light weight scarf and you’ll feel bundled up without all the extra warmth.  *If its cool in the morning, pair it with a light cardi for a quick chic look*

  • Throw on a blazer.

Pair it over a summery dress and roll the sleeves up.  Chic but cool!  *Add some velour booties (one of the hottest shoe trends of the moment) for the perfect fall look!

  • Add tights.

If you’re brave enough (or maybe work in a cold office), bring out the tights!  Colored tights (think navy, grey, mustard, or plum) are an instant way to feel like fall! P.S. Black tights never go out of style, whether thick or sheer…it is in style!

What are your favorite ways to transition to fall?

Is it still a hot fall where you live?

Quick Style Guide: Minimizing Broad Shoulders

Everyone has an area on their bodies they are uncomfortable with. You know you minimize it and cover it up whenever possible.

My area is my shoulders.  To me, they are very broad.  This eliminates lots of strapless tops/dresses from my wardrobe because they bring too much attention to my shoulders.  This summer I’ve been more determined to wear strapless items, using a few little tricks to minimize broad shoulders.  Here are three tips to break up the vast expanse of bare skin:

Use your hair.

If your hair is long enough, wear it in front of your shoulders. Voila! No broad shoulders!

Wear a large necklace.

Whether it is a statement necklace or a number of necklaces, make sure it is long enough to graze the top of your shirt.  The thickness acts kind of like straps.

Wear a tank top underneath.

If in doubt, wear a  tank top under it.  It does its job and completely breaks up shoulders with actual straps.  It is also another way to remix a shirt/dress.

I’ve used these to wear a few strapless things in my wardrobe this summer, including the romper seen above.  Makes me feel a little more confident in strapless things, which are so necessary in 100 degree summers!

Do you have any more ways for minimizing broad shoulders? I’d love to hear them/try them out!

Quick Style Guide: Pattern/Print Mixing Made Easy

Are you as obsessed with pattern/print mixing as I am?  I love looking through my favorite blogs & magazine to see how they mix florals, prints, and patterns together! But when it comes to wearing it myself, I get stumped.  I’m afraid I’m going to look stupid or just plain confused about what to put together.

Well I’ve conquered my fear a few times and found some laugh proof (and EASY!) ways to mix patterns!

1.  Mix your print with stripes!

Your stripes can be used as a neutral.  Try something easy like a black/white striped shirt and pair it with any kind of print. You can’t go wrong!  Add a striped cardigan on top of a printed dress. Accentuate a printed top with a light weight striped scarf. Or pair a striped top with printed bottoms.  Find a striped item that has the same colors as your print. Staying in the same color family ensures a more cohesive look! EXAMPLE: If you have a Navy/Red striped shirt, add a red based print skirt.

My Take:

2. Pair your pattern with polka dots!

Just like stripes, use your dots as a neutral. The print and dots should also be in a similar color family. (Unless you’re really bold and mismatch on purpose!)  Since you’ve got two “patterns” going on the matchy color scheme won’t look too preppy, just chic! Neutral (black, white, brown, tan) based dots are an easy way to start! Dots have the same principle as stripes. Whether the dots are on a skirt, shirt, cardigan, dress, or blouse, pairing them with a patterned print or floral print is an easy way to get into the mixing trend.

My Take:

One last safe bet:

Pairing your stripes and dots!  If they are in the same color family/same color, it is completely chic.  What’s prettier and more classic than black/white polka dots and stripes!

See mixing is easy!  Remember to use your stripes or dots as a neutral and stay in the same color family.  You’ll be a mixing pro in no time!

Quick Style Guide: Chic Transitioning from Winter to Spring

Spring has sprung.  Or at least on the calendar! If you’re anything like me, you want spring and summer clothes NOW.  Here are a few quick ways to update your wardrobe with spring touches that are still weather appropriate.

Lighter washes are perfect for Spring.  Put away your dark winter washes and dream of warmer, sunnier days!

Cool in the morning? Throw on a colorful, lightweight cardigan!  Even better for a cold office! I’m loving any kind of print.  Try stripes for a completely on trend look!

Don’t be afraid to pull out your shorter dresses!  Pair them with a jean jacket! Pair with tights for a chillier day! And while I’m not a huge fan of maxi dresses…jean jackets look great over them.

Scarves are perfect to dress up a tee or a light sweater.  Keep the fabric light weight!  Printed scarves look chic with a solid color shirt!

I’m obsessed! OBSESSED!  Replace your dark skinnies with white denim!  What about the No White Before Easter Rule? Rules, especially fashion ones, are meant to be broken. So get over this one. You’ve been wearing white sweaters haven’t you?

There ya go. Five easy and chic ways to transition to spring!
