The Nail File: How to Water Marble A Pattern on your Nails

I’ve wanted to try water marbling since I saw this picture on Pinterest!

image via pinterest

I’d never seen anything like it and knew I wanted to try.  There are lots of tutorials and videos out there!  Now I’m going to add mine!   But I’m gonna be honest.   At first, this was HARD!  It took a good while to figure out the right process and end up with these nails!  I’ll give you my tips though!

I did well and took pictures at the beginning, then gave up. Sorry! It was a long project!  After a little twitter advice from Suze, I tweaked a little bit of the process/needs to make it easier.

 What You’ll Need:

At least 2 thick** nail polishes

Shot glass/Disposable small cup filled 90% with water

Toothpicks

Clear Adhesive Tape (like Scotch Tape)

(Essie in Mint Candy Apple, Sally Hansen Insta-Dri in Fuschia Flare)

 Also Recommended:

A small cup/bowl with Nail Polish Remover

Q-tips (specifically those pointy makeup ones!)

Paper towels

 Steps:

  1. Apply clear tape around all sides of your fingers.  This is the most time consuming part but it is worth it when you are finished.  Get as close as you can to every edge of the nail.  It’ll be less to remove later.
  2. Pull your water cup in front of you. Carefully drop nail polish into the water.  It will disperse but still be opaque!** Drip in your next colors.  It’ll create a bull’s-eye effect.
  3. With a toothpick, working quickly~~, pull through the polish to create the marble effect.
  4. Place your nail face down into the water where you want the design to appear.  Dip and pull your finger out.  Only a second or two, just make it long enough to cover the entire nail.  It will dry quickly, so don’t worry.
  5. With your toothpick, clear away the excess polish from the water. It should all stick to the toothpick after a few seconds.
  6. Repeat the process with all of your nails! Remove the tape, and apply topcoat as usual.  After your top coat has dried, use a q- tip to remove the excess polish on your skin.  The pointy ones are super handy, here!

 Left hand

Right Hand

**Use thick polish!  You know, that only take one coat normally! If your polish isNOT thick enough, it will drip and then become clear.   You’ll notice it immediately!  This is where I messed up the worst.  I didn’t realize my mistake for a good 10 tries.  I went through a lot of tape!

~~The polish dries quickly in the water.  If you take too long between drips, it will all congeal on your nail.

No matter what, it is all easy to fix.  So if you do mess up, who cares, try again!  Hopefully you can learn through my mistakes and enjoy your pretty new nails!  I LOVE mine!

What do you think of water marbled nails? Have you tried this?

Sephora’s Chic Prints For Nails equal patterns of love!

We all follow celebrity fashion and beauty for influence and inspiration. So when Katy Perry, Beyonce, Kim Kardashian, Lady Gaga,
Rihanna, and more starting sporting awesome patterns on their nails, I took notice! (hounds tooth, zebra, silver fishnet, floral, cherries, leopard print)  Welcome to the world of Minx Nails!

What is it? “Made of flexible film, Minx finally gives women completely customized nails that can feature the exact pattern and colors of their newest gown, their favorite photo, or that season’s hottest designs. Because Minx is not a liquid and no hazardous chemicals are used in its application, manicurists can easily apply it to clients at the same time that hair and makeup are being done. Minx does not require any drying time, nor are there any fumes, spills, smudging or chipping. “[Minx Press Room]

I want, I want!  Of course when I tried to locate a salon near me, I found that the closest one was over 1 ½ hours away and that a Minx manicure starts at $65. FAIL!

Ah, but all hope is not dashed! Leave it to Sephora and OPI to step up to the plate! Voila!

Chic Prints for Nails!

What it is:
A breakthrough array of precut nail patches for extraordinary nails, instantly!

What it does:
This innovative line, brewed by Minx (and loved by your favorite celebrities) creates customized nails, featuring fierce patterns and prints to satisfy your wildest mani-and-pedi dreams. Dress your tips with your favorite design: anchor, stars, checkers, tiger, fishnet, chrome lace, black & gold geometric, or skulls.

What else you need to know:
One set of Chic Print for Nails contains 16 nail patches of varying widths, for a one-time application to fingers or toes. The nail patch is a solid-film material with an adhesive back that is activated by friction. The warmth from friction creates conformability, allowing the patch to fit over the compound curves of your nails and seal onto the nail bed. The patent-pending material removes easily by rubbing and peeling off. [Sephora.com]

Chrome Lace and Fishnet nail prints

When I got close to the nearest Sephora, I snatched up 2 designs–Chrome Lace (white background with bright silver lace) and Fishnet (magenta with silver “fishnet”)  At $15 a piece, they are much more affordable than an actual Minx manicure.2010-07-14 20.34.17

When I got home I opened the package of Chrome Lace to see 16 strips of nail art ready to be applied.

2010-07-14 20.35.06It recommended starting with clean, bare nails. Check!  It also recommended trimming down the nails with small scissors.  I didn’t do that step and it might have helped.

2010-07-14 20.34.32

I rubbed the print and then peeled it off the sheet.  It worked just like the directions said.

I applied the rounded end near the cuticle and rubbed it on smoothing out the bubbles as I rubbed.

This left an extremely long end of nail print to be filed. (this is where I should have trimmed it with scissors!)

I filed with downward strokes to remove the excess print.  Then re-rubbed all nails to ensure all nails were smooth.

The directions said nothing about putting on a clear top coat but I’m paranoid so I applied two coats of Sally Hensen’s Insta-Dri Top Coat.2010-07-16 11.16.55

WOW! I was beyond amazed and couldn’t stop staring at my nails! The pattern was subtle enough but showed.  The silver/chrome effect—whoa, wow, and any other astonishing word you can think of!

The pretty pattern lasted 5 days and by the end some of the edges started to peel up, including where I filed it down.  I think if I would have cut them down before I filed the extra off, they might have lasted longer. (See! The top of the nail looks rough, and the edges near the cuticle started lifting from the nail)

2010-07-19 12.52.31

I got great comments and feedback about the pattern, especially the pretty chrome effect!  Though the mailman asked me if I put tin foil on my nails?  They were easy to remove, like peeling off a sticker.  One quick hand wash remove any excess glue.  I’m already itching to use the magenta fishnet set but I want to wait for a more special occasion! I also want to buy mutiples of the entire collection so I can have saucy nails all the time! I think I’m in nail love!

For the $15 price tag, these nail patterns are the perfect answer to when you want to feel extra special!

Another plus: if you don’t have a Sephora near you, you can order them online!

Downtown Girls on MTV: Maybe worth watching!

Last week, a new show premiered on MTV-Downtown Girls. I watched a rerun over the weekend and stumbled upon the new episode last night!  It reminds me of a “regular girl” version of  The City.

I’m not completely sold yet but a couple of things intrigue me:
1)       its about a Glamour.com “Smitten” blogger, Shallon Lester (I love all things Glamour Magazine)

2)       its starts and ends with a video blog, all the while Shallon narrates (I love video blogs and her narration reminds of how my friends and I speak)

3)       the girls wear cute things and have pretty hair (shallow, shallow, shallow-but TV is just another way for me to get outfit and beauty ideas)

So I’ll keep watching and along the way, I’ll share what ideas the show has sparked.  Last night’s ideasà new nail color and outfit idea( a different post)

Throughout the episode (based on finding a new man for Shallon) I got a glimpse of Shallon’s nails! They were white!   When I first saw them, it instantly brought back a memory!

About 4 years ago, my bestie came in to our college class with a white manicure! It was so cute that I copied it about a month later.  (We were SO ahead of the trend!)

I LOVE IT!

They are cute, summery, and easy to DIY!  You definitely won’t mess them up the way an unsteady hand would mess up a DIY French manicure.

Here are Shallon’s white nails:

(Yep, that’s Shallon! She’s got on a black wig )

So seeing Shallon’s white nails was totally fun.  I looked down at my half worn off neon pink nails (Essie’s Pink Parka) and decided—WHITE!

Downtown Girls is worth a few more episodes, I can always use more inspiration! I’m off to paint my nails white!

What do you think of white nails? Have you watched Downtown Girls?

P.S. stay tuned for that inspired outfit post!

Shine Beauty Guru Review: Paint Nude! on your nails! Love the effect!

Beauty Guru Reviews Nail Polish Shade In Nude!

That would make quite the headline wouldn’t it! But its true! We got to review one of this season hottest trends-Nude/Neutral nail polish!  We got to test CND’s Colour & Effects line in Desert Suede and Gold Shimmer polish.

Their website touts “Content yourself with rich crème Colour or kick it up a notch with Effects.” (Colour & Effects- CND)

Oh, and how content am I!  I tried these polishe 3 different ways:Desert Suede alone, Gold Shimmer alone, and together.

Here’s each shade alone (ignore the bad hands!):

The Desert Suede alone was a nice change from the pinks and reds I’ve been sporting lately.  I wasn’t sure about it at first, kept looking at my fingers to check if I still had fingernails. It was that neutral!  My fiance told me it tlooked like I had been making ginger snap cookies and forgot to wash my hands. (I don’t listen to him about certain things, nail polish is one! Seriously, what does he know?)

The Gold Shimmer alone was also wonderful. It was so subtle and noticeable only if the light caught my hands just right!  I felt like it was my own secret beauty trick.  Plus, so much better than just naked nails.  Who doesn’t like to shimmer?!

The combo together was BOOM! (bam! is trademarked or something right?!?)  The gold shimmer toned down the Desert Suede and made it a beautiful neutral polish to wear every day, with everything! After a week and half this stuff had slightly chipped without a top coat! Its defienlty got long lasting ability which is a godsend in nail polish!

I’m not wearing it at the moment ’cause I’m testing wedding nail color. Neutral is too close with my cream dress, BUT as soon as we are on our beachy honeymoon in 2 weeks this combo will be on my hands and feet! Perfect for the sand and sun!

CND Nail polish is definetly worth the price!

Bonus: browsing through the website, they have tons of other colour/effect combos I’m dying to try!

Check them out here!
