Designer of the week: Naeem Khan

Designer of the week

NAEEM KHAN

Many of the world’s most stylish women are devotees to one of the biggest names in fashion: Naeem Khan.  Committed to adoring elegant women in clothes, befitting their refinement, his glittering fan base of starlets and socialites includes Beyonce, Eva Longoria, Penelope Cruz, Carrie Underwood, Katherine Heigl, Debra Messing, Brooke Shields, Taylor Swift, Emily Blunt, Kim Cattrall, First Lady Michelle Obama and Queen Noor of Jordan, and his designs have graced the silver screen in fashion film classics like Sex & the City and Dreamgirls.

His luxurious collection consists of impeccable cut dresses, sophisticated gowns and chic separates- all embroidered by hand.  Khan was born in India and grew up surrounded by the beauty of its culture, architecture, history and design.  He cultivated his vast knowledge of textiles under the watchful eyes of his grandfather and father, both well know in India for designing intricate clothing worn by the royal families.

As a child, he was mesmerized by the handiwork produced in their workshops, and always knew he wanted to be part of their intensely visual medium.  As a teenager, Khan moved to the United States and apprenticed for Halston, where he absorbed the ethos of modern restraint, and the secrets of draping and cutting fabric to create a clean, elegant, timeless silhouette.  Between equally opulent but aesthetically opposite worlds of his father and Halston, Khan’s style was nurtured and his aesthetic was born.

He launched his eponymous collection, Naeem Khan, in 2003 and began selling at Bergdorf Goodman, Harrods, Neiman Marcus and Saks Fifth Avenue.  Since then the collection has grown to be sold at more than 100 specialty stores across the world.  His runway shows are among the most anticipated events of New York fashion week.

In 2008, Naeem Khan was inducted as a member of the prestigious Counsel of Fashion Designers of America.

Naeem debuted a collection for HSN, TIMELESS by Naeem Khan, in October 2009, which sold out within moments of his first appearance on the network.  The line sold exclusively via HSN and consists of cocktail dresses and separates.

Style.com’s  Alison Baenen reviewed Khan’s RTW Spring 2011 collection:

“Roberto Cavalli, are you sitting down? Naeem Khan dove into tropical waters for Spring, focusing almost exclusively on eveningwear options for the Palm Beach-to-Cannes set, with a big splash of Saint-Tropez party gear thrown in, too. And while there were no animal prints on the loose—Khan continued with the floral-inspired treatments he debuted at Resort—there were beaded shoes, sparkling caftans, and door-knocker necklaces designed by his wife, Ranjana. The caftans and chunky turquoise lent a seventies vibe to the affair; the fabulous excess called to mind a certain Italian.

It was an over-the-top embellishment celebration, a melee of colors, and hardly any dresses that screamed “Michelle!” Come to think of it, a strapless yellow crepe to-the-floor gown with jet black embroidery would look stunning on the First Lady, but a one-sleeve, slit-to-the-hip, allover sequin number in fuchsia and turquoise would have the Huffington Post crowd in a tizzy. Relatively subdued by comparison was a painterly print in mottled grays and white on a one-shouldered organza gown with a full, sweeping skirt. Take away the embroidered belt and pendant necklace and you might have something to wear north of the Mason-Dixon line. Stunning enough to wear anywhere (with a VIP room) was a fitted, drop-waist sheath embroidered with white flowers and a skirt made of ostrich feathers. Even next to so many other jaw-droppers, it had a lingering glamour that was compelling.”

A New Dress every day around $1, oh yes she did!

You may have read this report on Yahoo! last week, which is where I found it. But I’m still fascinated and if you haven’t, stay tuned for an awesome read about the creative idea a girl had to save money and get cute clothes!

Concept: “365 days. 365 items of clothing. 365 dollars” [NewDressADay]

Reality: the New Dress A Day blog

Marisa decided that she “will be foregoing trips to Bloomies and Nordstrom for brand new gear. Goodbye to H&M purchases and accessory grabbing at Forever 21. And seeing the “must have” French Connection dress in People’s Style Watch will just have to suffice as a cut out on my inspiration board.

Instead, the only shopping that I’ll be able to do is that of pieces that have been used and worn already.  So long to mall trips and hello to sifting through piles of vintage pieces at flea markets and at neighborhood garage sales. Each day for the entire year, I’m going to introduce a new piece into my existing wardrobe that I’ve found from these places.  On top of this, I’m giving myself a budget of $1 a day.” [NewDressADay]

So the yahoo article got me interested and I was hooked. I spent the next 2 hours reading through her whole year so far (which will come to an end in Nov.).  The stuff she had done is amazing. My favorites are the befores/afters, of course! The fact that she buys these clothes, some that are truly awful to look at much less wear, and turns them into such chic little dresses, skirts and tops is motivating!

After all my reading I was so inspired to grab my sewing machine and head to Good Will and sew my heart out, knowing this wouldn’t work on MANY levels.  A) I don’t know how to sew B) I don’t know how to sew.  Regardless, I’m getting inspiration and happiness from Marisa’s blog and tune in everyday to see how the muumuu becomes the floral mini!  Take a look at some of my fave of her transformations!

Red Carpet Rundown: Twilight Eclipse

Oh loves its here again!  Time for the Red Carpet Rundown for Twilight’s Eclipse!  I’m totally psyched about the premiere next Thursday at midnight!  For now, let’s focus on what the stars were wearing!!!

Kristen Stewart In a white one sleeve embroidered Elie Saab wool mini

Kristen Stewart

Now last year she wowed. This year ….eeh! She looks cute but not stunning. The dramatic one shoulder white dress makes her look a little pale, and her hair would’ve been prettier down!  But the dramatic low cut back is just the edgy feature that kicked it up.

Nikki Reed In an embroidered sky chiffon Marchesa dress with feather skirt and shoulder detailNikki Reed

Such a pretty girl, such a not pretty dress!? Did she raid Johnny Weir’s closet? Her hair and makeup—stunning!

Dakota Fanning In a beige one shoulder lace Elie Saab cocktail dress with feather hem detail Dakota Fanning

Oh little Dakota, is not so little anymore!  Its hard to believe that this girl is around the same age as Miley!  Dakota ALWAYS dresses appropriate for her age and this little beige number is no exception. Playful with the lace, eye-catching with the one shoulder! And her rosy makeup is so SUMMER!

Ashley Greene In an Alexis Mabille Couture column dressAshley Greene

I love Ashley.  I wish I could look like Ashley, but I do not like this dress on Ashley.  She made a dramatic statement in this long flowy dress with her long hair!  I just wish the dress didn’t look like it was going to swallow her body part by body part.

Anna Kendrick In a gold pleated Marchesa cocktail dressAnna Kendrick

I’m confused about this look.  I really am. On one hand I think she looks beautiful, the gold is super fierce and the hair makeup is sultry.  On the other hand, if you study this dress, its ugly.  An 80’s nightmare.  So just glance, don’t stare!

Bryce Dallas Howard In a lemon-colored Christian Dior dress and Bulgari jewels Bryce Dallas Howard

While I adore this vintage looking dress, and she looks lovely in it, I think it’s a little off for this premiere.  Her red hair however I’m in love!

AnnaLynne McCord In a nude Nicole Miller gownAnnaLynne McCord Kourtney and Kim Kardashian Kourtney, in an animal print knee-length dress; Kim, in a sheer black frock Kourtney&Kim Kardashian

Why was she there? Oh yeah, her and Kellan Lutz are an item.  Nude and light colored dresses were the trend of the evening.  Anna looks pretty, not her usual hot mess self, but still nothing to write home about.  Plus I think the hemline is a little to crazy. More Promy, than Premiere.

Both girls looked pretty in tight fit dresses that covered up for once. I like the slicked back pony/braid too!

Marisa Miller In a sparkling Anna Sui frockMarisa Miller

She looks exactly like the Victoria Secret Angel that she is.   If only I could look like this everyday!  That dress=splendid!

Amber Rose In a gray sweetheart dress Amber Rose

Um, no. Saggy boobs anyone?? Next time some one hand her a bra!

Jennie Garth In a pewter metallic Tadashi Shoji silk dressJennie Garth

Cute, cute, cute! Jennie’s metallic dress and poppy lips are charming!

Jennifer Love Hewitt In a Dolce & Gabbana lace miniJennifer Love Hewitt

Loving the lace dress, the big hair and sexy red lips!  Not loving the thigh high cut hemline.

And last but not least we can’t talk about the movie Eclipse without a picture of Rob, Kristen, and Taylor! Main Starst

*sigh* Next Thursday needs to get here fast! Who wore your favorite look??

My Spring Wedding-Dresses, Shoes, Jewelry, oh my!

I think every little girl dreams of the day she gets married starting around the age 3. Its encouraged and though of as cute.  This includes visions of big dresses, long trains, flowy veils, and lots and lots of tulle, bridesmaids in colors all matchy.  I was no exception.  I was into drawing around 12 and designed my own dress back then.  It was quite elaborate with rhinestones, low cut backs, and pretty flowy fabric.  But what it definitely was NOT was a big puffy tulle dress that would make me look like I belonged on the top of the wedding cake or my bridesmaids look like 80’s prom queens.   Well, fast forward 11 or so years, time to plan my wedding!   It was a small intimate wedding with family, close friends, and bridal party and of course outstanding fashion!

Bridesmaids:

Bridesmaid dresses are one of the hardest things about wedding planning to me.

Do you want them to match? Will they all look good in the same thing? What color would be best? Could they wear it again?

Being a bridesmaid isn’t just showing up in a pretty dress and walking down an aisle.  You have to buy the dress, shoes, jewelry, pampering, gifts, and possibly throw showers.   That stuff usually ain’t cheap. 5 years ago, I decided my girls were going to wear black (so they could wear the dress again). I wanted them to find a little black dress that fit them-their personality, their taste, their body, and their comfort level.  Also one that wouldn’t break their bank–I left it up to them to chose how much they wanted to spend on their dress and shoes.

I only had 3 requirements for the whole ensemble:

  • Black heels (open toed/strappy)
  • above/at knee length dress.
  • Satin sheen fabric

And I secretly hoped they would all choose different necklines, and they DID!  Four girls, for different necklines: one shouldered (asymmetric), strapless, scoop neck, and off-the-shoulder (portrait).
They had different shoes and different dresses.  I gave them each vintage rhinestone earrings to top off the whole ensemble.  They all looked the same but individual. They were the best looking bridesmaids I’ve ever seen. (though I might be partial)

  Bride’s Dress:

When we went to look for wedding dresses, I tried on about 25 or more.  And, as cliché as it is, my dress chose me!  This one was one of the last I tried on and it was perfect.   I didn’t feel like a wedding cake topper!  It wasn’t tulley, it wasn’t a poufy, It was totally me!

It is a SCALA Destination Dress in cream, with beautiful beading on the neckline, bottom, and back.  It has a sheer overlay making it appear strapless and a deep sheer back.  It had a slight train that was just the perfect length.  I found my shoes at David’s Bridal Online Boutique.  They were a 4 in heel in cream with a bow and rhinestone clasp in the center.  My earrings were vintage leaf earrings and my bracelet was borrowed from my mom that looked vintage.  I felt like I stepped out of the 1920’s!

The bridesmaids black dresses and my cream jeweled dress tied together the “traditional with vintage touches” wedding.  It couldn’t have been more special. Thanks for letting me share!

And that’s the whole fashion and beauty recap of my spring wedding! All images are from Treasured Moments Portraits ( Pittsburg , TX )

Varying Temps= layers, layers, layers!

Spring DressIt’s a lovely afternoon. Sun is shining and it’s a good 75ish degrees. My wardrobe: a black/white striped floral print dress. The top half is tiny black and white striped with a wide stretch band empire waist with a floral print pattern on the bottom half. And I’m wearing leggings underneath it with black heels. This morning when I left the house it was in the high thirties and the hottest temperature today is supposed to be around 80 degrees.

That’s a huge variance! It makes it hard to dress in the morning. Thus, I threw on leggings under my dress. I’m not in love with the look, but I don’t think it’s horrible. Its wearable. Tights just didn’t seem like the right choice. At least I can more easily take off leggings?!?

My question: Are leggings under a dress ok? What do you think of this kind of look? Would you wear it? What are other solutions to these varying spring temps?
