Designer of the Week: Rachel Roy

Another Tuesday, another Desiger of the Week

RACHEL ROY

“Rachel Roy approaches the design of her eponymous collection with a feminine and modern point of view. Her goal is to create clothing for women who embrace fashion and dress with an effortless elegance and confidence. The results encapsulate a fresh version of glamour that evades the standard protocol for dressing today.

Originally from California, Rachel attended college in Washington DC. Upon graduation, Rachel pursued her passion for design, and moved to New York City to work freelance; styling magazine shoots and music videos ultimately landing an internship at Rocawear.

As an intern she worked in every department at Rocawear, from the mailroom to marketing and finally, women’s design. As the company was in its infancy, Rachel quickly proved herself as an essential commodity, ultimately to become Creative Director overseeing seven licensees and running all of the design departments and their teams for Rocawear Juniors and Girls.

In Fall 2004, she applied her sophisticated aesthetic to her own collection, RACHEL ROY, which debuted in department and specialty stores for Spring 2005. With striking silhouettes, a sophisticated color palette and inventive pairings which transition from day to evening, Roy has garnered editorial acclaim in publications such as Vogue, Elle, Harper’s Bazaar, W and Vanity Fair.

Michelle Obama, Eva Mendes, Kate Hudson, Jennifer Garner, Iman, Lucy Liu, Sharon Stone and Penelope Cruz among others have worn RACHEL ROY at Hollywood’s most prestigious events, and in January 2007 Rachel was invited to appear as a guest on The Oprah Winfrey Show, a milestone in a still young career.  Also in 2007, Roy was inducted into the CFDA as a new member where she stands alongside other esteemed fashion industry individuals.

RACHEL ROY NEW YORK has grown to include four full collections each year, and in June 2008, created a joint venture with Jones Apparel Group Inc. in the hopes of expanding the wholesale business globally, introduce new product categories and open stand-alone stores in the United States and abroad.  Jones Apparel Group is supporting Rachel Roy in launching a Rachel Rachel Roy diffusion brand that will be offered exclusively through Macy’s, Inc. beginning in August 2008.  To date, the RACHEL ROY collections are available at Saks Fifth Avenue, Bergdorf Goodman, Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom and top specialty stores worldwide. Style.com’s Meenal Mistry said this of Rachel’s Spring 2011 Collection: “The first thing you saw walking into Rachel Roy‘s presentation was a nude-tone rainbow of trenchcoat-based looks on mannequins. “I call it the Band-Aid capsule,” explained Roy. “You know how Band-Aids disappear on your skin? That’s what I want these to do in a woman’s wardrobe.” The tight nine-look group of coats and dresses worked variations on the iconic utilitarian piece: a khaki coat edged in a large ruffle, a peachy belted sequin dress with epaulets. Roy seemed to kick herself for not doing it earlier. “The trench is so important to me, personally,” she said. “Why am I not focusing on it?”

Sometimes the best thing is right under your nose. What does Roy’s customer want? They want to look like her—forever polished and noticeably stylish yet never silly. And today the designer quieted some of the unnecessary flourishes that sometimes get in her way and instead let a mix of jewel brights and bold prints do the talking on slim shifts, loose dolman-sleeve blouses, and flaring skirts. Two peplum bustiers trussed superfluously over button-down shirts were the sole exceptions. “The intention is to grow with every collection,” said Roy. Consider this a nice little spurt.” Style.com

Designer of the Week: Trina Turk

I’ve decided to bring back a feature we had last year: Designer of the Week.  Now, every week tune in on Tuesdays to get the scoop on your favorite designers.  You’ll get a brief history, some of the press work they’ve done, and a few pictures of their newest collection.  So lets get started.  This week:

TRINA TURK

“Born in California and raised there and in the state of Washington, her mother taught her to sew when Trina was 11 years old. She studied apparel design at the University of Washington and took her first job with the Seattle-based sportswear manufacturer, Britannia Jeans. Trina went to Los Angeles, where she waded into a sea of 30 prints per season designing surf wear for Ocean Pacific. Other jobs designing mostly juniors followed.

Realizing that her resume wasn’t likely to bring offers to design a line of contemporary clothing for women, Turk’s next step was the launch of her own business. With her husband, then stylist, now photographer Jonathan Skow as partner, Trina Turk, the company, was born in 1995. In the same year her clothing was sold by Barney’s New York, Fred Segal, and Saks Fifth Avenue. With design and production headquartered minutes from Downtown Los Angeles in Alhambra California, Trina Turk’s wholesale sales topped $40 million in 2009.” (About Page)

Inspired by the multicultural mix, architecture, and landscape of Los Angeles and California, The Trina Turk Collection is full of the Season’s most casually sophisticated – and “must have” silhouettes. Trina’s philosophy is to create wearable, optimistic fashion that incorporates the best aspects of classic American sportswear. The collection has become known for an amazing pant fit and gorgeous signature prints. The Daily Front Row said this of her Spring 2011 collection: “(NEW YORK) TRINA TURK
Imagine the simpler life, before the digital revolution, internet, email and even voicemail, before the Brangelinas and Bennifers. For Spring 2011, Turk recreatd a retro luxe Palm Springs aerie circa 1974, with Steve McQueen and Ali McGraw lounging about their glam lovenest with guests just as fab as their surroundings. The secret to Trina’s success is how she translates her classic preppy chic sensibility with retro patterns into a modern chicette’s wardrobe.  The loft was transformed into several rooms (Pool Deck, Refreshment Bar, Party Room and Bedroom) which provided the perfect backdrop and mood to display Trina’s printed cushions and bedding amongst her cheery and primary colored tunics, jumpsuits, and dresses and jewelry for women and bold printed blazers and shorts for men. The collection had a very relaxed ’70s luxe Halston-inspired feel with one shouldered tunics and blouson jersey dresses adorned with gold cabochon cuffs and chunky statement necklaces.”

Polo + Olympics = Well Dressed Athletes

ept_sports_oly_experts-114861711-1265121333

Get ready for the gold, silver and bronze, hopefully won by the red white and blue! The Olympics are coming!

Ralph Lauren has dressed the US Olympic athletes for the Opening Ceremony!  Talk about true American spirit.   Take a look! Designers don’t get much more red, white, and blue than POLO!!

Inspired by designs worn during the 1932 Lake Placid Winter Olympics, these outfits are so American they basically play Bruce Springsteen songs.” (Yahoo!)

“Down jackets, turtlenecks, knit caps, and the ubiquitous slim-leg trousers make up the kits that will be worn by every athlete from the lithe Tanith Belbin to the decidedly un-lithe John Shuster. I’m guessing the pants will look better on some people than others, but in general, the traditional look is really nice.

Belbin is excited to wear the gear, telling USA Today, ”It’s great to have such an interestingly designed collection. I know that’s something that all the winter athletes were jealous of when we saw the Beijing Games. We wanted to stand out and look really well put together.” Easy for her to say. She’d look good in anything.” (Yahoo!)

“There’s a lot more than just the Opening Ceremony outfits though. Ralph Lauren has produced an entire line of clothing that the competitors will be wearing around Vancouver. Shawl-collar cardigans, hooded sweatshirts, and down vests make up the collection.” (Yahoo!)

If you wanna  dress like the atheltes, it’s all available online. (but it ain’t cheap!)  I like this clean cut look and love that its all designed by classic designer Ralph Lauren!

What do you think of the designer Olympic wear? Would you buy it?

Are you excited for the Olympics?

Oh Boy, Olsenboye!

Unless you’ve been living under a rock with no tv, or media in the US for the last 23 years, then you definetly know who the Olsen twins are. Mary-Kate and Ashley have built an empire in their life so far, and made a huge impact on the fashion world through their own line, Elizabeth and James, and even their own coffee table book! Now, they are collaborating with JC Penney’s for a new Junior line.

“Olsenboye, which is the Olsens’ ancestral name, will fall into Penney’s good and better price tiers. Olsenboye is a casual sportswear and accessories collection that includes denim, bottoms, tops, dresses, skirts, shorts, jackets, handbags and shoes. The line will retail from $20 to $50 and is being designed to be mixed to create different looks. The brand also will periodically flow in travel-inspired mini collections, each reflecting the looks and trends of different cities.

Beginning Nov. 6, Olsenboye will be available on jcp.com and in those 50 stores, including the Manhattan flagship, for a limited time. The collection will have a major rollout, set for 600 Penney’s stores in February.

It’s very fun, fashion driven, trendy and wholesome at the same time.” [WWD]

Now, Steve Madden is in on it to reports WWD. “Steven Madden Ltd. has signed a licensing agreement with Dualstar Entertainment Group to produce a collection of footwear and accessories for Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen’s new Olsenboye line….” [WWD]

I am looking forward to the launch of Olsenboye since I love some of their Elizabeth&James looks. And they’ve given everyone a tantalizing preview with a great commercial for JC Penney.
