It’s only my new favorite beauty go to site! I stumbled upon some of their great tutorials through pinterest and tracked the sources down to The Beauty Department.  From makeup tips to hair how to’s, they have you covered.  And its not random, untrusted names!

Here’s the low down:

“This is a site for anyone who’s ever had a beauty question or gotten into a fight with a hair brush and lost. In the process we are truly excited to get to know all of you! We want  to read your emails and we want you to participate in our voting polls so we can figure out exactly what you need! We want to make beauty as accessible as possible. We’re releasing new things every day including videos, printable photo tutorials and exclusive images of our lovely Lauren Conrad.

You read that right! LAUREN CONRAD.  She’s a personal favorite celeb of mine and now she’s using her celebrity power in the name of beauty! She teamed up with her professional hair  stylist (Kristen Ess) and makeup artist (Amy Nadine) to for The Beauty Department.   So it is sources you can actually trust with insider knowledge!

They post every day and they include such fun stuff as:

They’ve got video makeup and hair tutorials to die for! The latest…the french braid!  I also learned how to do a fishtail braid from their tutorials!  Easy to understand and great to watch it done.  I can’t tell you how many times I’ve paused, rewound, and rewatched quite a few of these videos!

I have to say I can’t get enough of this site. I scroll through tutorials quite often to find inspiration and even their tweets with beauty tidbits are awesome!

If you haven’t had a chance to see The Beauty Department before, take a moment now. It’ll be worth it!

*this post is just full out love for TBD! No funny business…just good pure adoration*

Pam Am Eye Makeup..a tutorial

MAKEUP WEEK

I’m obsessed with the girls’ make up on ABC’s Pan Am.  The subtle little cat eye/winged eyeliner look is gorgeous!  I finally found the perfect eyeliner (I’m also using it for my Halloween costume, so it still abides by No Buy October rules!) and decided to make a tutorial! Here’s a little video on how to achieve their cat eye eyeliner look!.

….What I Used….
Eyeliner: Maybelline Line Stiletto in Blackest Black
Mascara: Maybeline Lash Stiletto in Blackest Black
Eyeshadow: Too Faced “Naked Eye” Palette

This was my first makeup tutorial video! What did you think? Are you on board with the winged eyeliner trend?

Realness of Concealness: A Lesson in Makeup

I’ve had so many things to tell you about makeup lately that I’m declaring this week:

MAKEUP WEEK

Let’s get straight in to it!

I’m a big fan of Benefit Cosmetics. Like huge! Half of my makeup is Benefit.  I bought it for my wedding makeup and have continued to add more since then.  For my foundation, I switch between Hello Flawless! and Some Kinda Gorgeous.  I’ve never been one to buy makeup for a specific problem area but when this little Benefit Beauty Kit went on sale at Ulta in September, I couldn’t resist.

(It is still on sale!!)

For $18, I thought I would give it a try.  Guys, I’m in love and don’t know how I lived with out it……Let’s go step by step.

Here’s what it promises:

“Sometimes a little concealing and perking up is all you need. It doesn’t take a makeover, just this crafty little kit containing our famous concealers and enhancers. Kit contains: lemon-aid to correct discoloration on eyelids; boi-ing to hide even the darkest under eye circles; ooh la lift to brighten, lighten and tighten the eye area; lip plump to prime, smooth, and plump lips; and high beam to give your skin an ethereal glow.”(Ulta)

So basically this little kit has 5 different “tools” in it.

Ooh la lift- This stuff goes under your eyes to de-puff.  Its a lotion like consistency and rubs in with no color affect.  I lightly rub it in with my finger tips in a circular motion before my foundation.  It works well. I feel like I look less tired in the morning.

Lip plump- a little goes a long way with this stuff.  It doesn’t really plump my lips at all but it sure does make a great primer for my lip stains.  I put three dots on my upper and lower lip and then rub it in with my fingers.

High Beam- This is a hightligher with a pretty shimmer to it. I don’t like shimmer a lot so I haven’t used it much. BUT it does looks great right under my eyebrows! I dot it on and rub it in after I’m done with all my makeup.

….but here’s where we get to the GREAT stuff….

This kit comes with two little compartments on the right with some miracle stuff!

Boi-ing-(the bottom tan one) This stuff goes on under the eyes to “hide dark circles.” I didn’t notice my dark circles until allergy season kicked into high gear.  I apply Boi-ing with my finger tips and pat it all around under my eye BEFORE my foundation.  It tones them down ALOT.  After I apply foundation and powder, they are only vague.  It is quite the little miracle.

Lemon Aid- (the top yellow one) I wasn’t sure about this stuff at first either.  I started using it on my eyelid (as directions state) the first few times, and didn’t like it.  Then one day, I remembered some random makeup tip I had heard about using a “yellow” tint to conceal.  You know those tips..how some lipstick (yellow-based or blue-based) is better depending on skin tone…I’ve never known exactly what this color-based stuff was or how to look for it.  Then it clicked.  Here was a “yellow-based” makeup product directly in front of me.  So I patted it with my fingers on to some red spots.  I applied the rest of my makeup as usual and bam! Perfect spotless face.  Some times NOT using as directed pays off!

Using this kit for the past month, I feel like my makeup is more flawless than it has ever been without looking caked on.  All of these products are light to apply and never feel heavy.   My suggestion: run don’t walk to get some of this stuff!  It won’t be on sale for ever so snatch it now!

To buy it online, visit Ulta here.

*blog disclosure*
I bought this product with my own hard earned money.  No motivation/incentive here. Just plain product love!

The Nail File: Glitter French Manicure

I change my nails a lot! A LOT!  So this means its time for another NAIL FILE!  This week I was inspired by this post from Cupcakes & Cashmere.  I fell in love with her glitter nails but wanted to try a more subtle version.  Here’s what I ended up with:

I painted on one coat of Essie in Rock Candy.  Then, painted the tips with  the pink glittery polish Pure Ice in Spitfire.  The glitter polish was thick so I filled in the darker part of the nail with another coat of the Essie in Rock Candy.  I layered on the Sally Hansen Insta Dri Top Coat until it was smooth across the whole nail!  I love the subtle pretty look of the manicure and the glitter was only really noticeable in the sun! It would be classy enough for an office job but still fun with the glitter!

P.S.  I also did some pretty pedicure work! I used Sephora Chic Prints in an discontinued pattern on my big toes then painted the remaining toes in a matching colors.  My toes feel FANCY!

The Nail File: Sally Hansen’s Nail Effects in Laced Up

On the nails this week:

Sally Hansen Salon Effects

Real Nail Polish Strips in Laced UP

I’ve tried Nail Polish strips before…remember the Sephora ones? These are much easier to apply!  I’ve only had them on for a day so I can’t tell you about how long they last yet.  When you apply them, read the directions.  Seriously, it is easy.  Shape your nails, buff with the included file, and swipe with nail polish remover to clean nail.  Apply as directed.

So easy to apply for a quick Salon manicure look. It took maybe 10 min to do it all.  Just because it was my first time and I’m always slow on the first go around.  I also applied a clear top coat to hopefully make it last longer.  I found mine at Walmart, but they are also available at Target, Walgreens, and CVS for about $8. Cheap way to get incredibly CHIC nails!
