Pinterest Project: Tuna Can Candle Holders

We all know Pinterest is just about the greatest thing ever and inspires ALL kinds of projects.  (My list for pinterest to-do’s is miles long!)  This project is on this list and actually got done! CHECK!

It was so easy that it took 5 minutes and is now in my living room.  Here’s the original  how to:

 Supplies:

Two Cans of Tuna

42 or so Clothes Pins

2 Tea Lights

Open, empty, and wash two cans of tuna.  You can make a sandwich or tuna casserole enjoy while you make it! It’s ok if there is still some glue, the pins will cover them.

Start placing pins all around the tuna can edge.

It took 21 clothes pins to go around my tuna cans.

Place a tea light in the center and light.  The original tutorial used a glass container with a tealight.  (Either way works.)

I am absolutely in love with this easy easy project! Right now they are in the tray on our coffee table, but my end goal for them is to be citronella candles out on the patio.  I also think they would be gorgeous painted or glittered for an absolute unique touch.   Dont’ forget to follow me on pinterest!

The Grown Up Bow, a DIY

Remember last week’s wedding wear inspiration?  The wedding has come and gone. And of course, leave it to me to STILL not have pictures on the blog for it…the What I Wore post is coming soon….But in preparation for the wedding, I made an accessory to go with my dress. A bow.  Yes, a bow.

This isn’t your daughters bow.

It’s the grown up bow.

No, ruffles, no buttons, no frills. Simple and sophisticated.

I was inspired by this picture from pinterest.  I love how loose, flowy, and sexy her hair is but its still dressy with the bow.  I didn’t have time to traipse all over God’s green earth to find a bow. So, I made one.

I ran to hobby lobby to buy flat alligator hair clips, and 1 1/2″ thick black satin ribbon. (total cost was around $4, my ribbon was 50% off) I also used a glue gun.

  • First, I cut one long strand of ribbon.  I guesstimate about 12 inches.
  • From here, form the ribbon into a loop.  Adjust the loop smaller or bigger, depending on how far you want it too stick out on the sides of your head. Then hot glue the ends of your loop together.
  • Find the middle of your loop and pinch this together with the ends.  You now have a “bow” form.   Glue this together.
  • Cut another piece of ribbon about 3″ long.  Center your “bow” in the middle of the 3″ ribbon.  Fold the sides of the 3″ section over and glue.  Voila! you have made the bow!
  • Center your bow on the alligator clip and hot glue. DONE!

Your end result will look like above!  I have no source for this tutorial since I just looked at the other picture and free-handed crafted it.

Here’s what it looked like when I was all fixed up. It had JUST the effect I wanted! Sophisticated, but sexy.  and yes, I took a picture of the picture on my camera…..

Good news for you…

I’ve decided to give 3 of these beautiful bows AWAY!!

Just leave a comment below, on my facebook page, or on twitter telling me how you would wear it.  There will be one winner from each.  Giveaway ends January 31st! GOOD LUCK!

Easy Halloween: Sandy Dee

Halloween is one of my favorite holidays. I love to decorate AND to dress up.  I’ve thought up the perfect costume this year.  While I don’t know where we’re celebrating, I know what I’m going as!  I always love to make my costumes so I was totally inspired by What I Wore’s Homemade Halloween Costumes.  Inspired enough to bring you a few

Easy Halloween Costumes

of my own!! From now until Halloween, tune in…first up…

Sandy from Grease

look at me I’m Sandra Dee…

…What You’ll Need

Off the Shoulder Black Shirt/Tank

Black Skinny Jeans or Thick Leggings

Black Stretchy Belt

Red High Heels

This costume is super easy!  The only part you might have to buy is a black tee that you can cut up.  You can cut a fitted Black Tee (cut off around the collar and part of the sleeves to make it “off shoulder”)  OR wear a thick strapped tank (just pull down the straps slightly off your shoulder). This is basically an all black ensemble!  Make sure most of your clothing items are fitted.  You might not wanna wear your tightest clothes, but you wanna show off your assets! If you don’t have a black stretchy belt, you can buy black elastic from a craft/fabric store and staple it together.

To truly achieve this look, use curlers or a curling iron to curl all of your hair. Run your fingers through it and fluff it all up.  You want it to look big. Makeup is simple for this costume.  Keep your eyeshadow neutral/brownish tones or use none at all. Rim eyes in black eyeliner and add 2 coats of mascara.  Finish face with RED LIPSTICK!  My favorite red is NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Pop Life.  Any lipstick will work as long as its bright red.  The only jewerly needed is Medium to Large Gold Hoop earrings! DONE!

…Extra touches…

If you have it, add a black leather jacket to hold over your shoulder.

A small red scarf to tie around your neck.

*p.s. I don’t condone smoking. Just leave it out for the costume.*

Stay tuned for more easy costume ideas!

DIY Love Print

Guys, I’ll admit this..I haven’t felt much inspiration lately.  It is that awkward time in the Texas “fall” when the calander says October/FALL.  But the temp gauge says 90 degrees and up.  My desire to wear jeans, cords, long sleeves and tights is going hard. But I can’t.  I would suffocate in this heat.. I’m in a funny state of mid season…I’ll get over it, but bear with me, PLEASE!   Until then, we’ll focus on some other stuff.  Including this DIY that I’ve been meaning to share FOREVER!!!

As you know, this whole year I’ve been redoing our apartment to fit “our” style, budget, and karma.  This has included both bathrooms.  Our master bath got a new color scheme of Black, Light Turquoise and Red.  (it needed to flow with our master bedroom which is black, white, and bright blue).

I had this great Ikea UNG DRILL frame and knew I wanted to use it on a small wall for maximum effect.  Previously, I found an frame/wall decor at Target that would have been PERFECT, thinking I could recreate it, I took a cell picture of it.  When I finally got around to remaking it, the picture was GONE! I was heartbroken, but decided to wing it!

Supplies:

  • White Poster board
  • Scissors
  • Exacto knife
  • Elmer’s Glue Stick
  • 4 Sheets of Scrapbook paper
  • Red Craft Paint
  • “LOVE” sparkly sticker

I took the backing off the frame and traced it onto the poster board.  Then cut out the oval.  I laid out my scrapbook paper.  I had to use 4 sheets all lined up.  I glued them all to the poster board then turned it over and set shoe boxes on it to make sure it stuck.   After about 30 minutes, I used an exacto knife to cut off the excess paper on the side of the oval. The seams of the paper are extremely unnoticeable.

I didn’t want it to look too perfect, so I finger painted a heart on the middle.

After it dried, I stuck the “Love” sticker directly in the middle of the heart and put it all back in the frame! This is now the pretty print that hangs in our bathroom!  It was an easy DIY that cost about $8 vs $25 for that first target print I saw.

Happy Birthday and a New Skirt

I haven’t done an outfit post in a LONG time.  Why? Because it is way too hot to stand outside for more than 10 minutes.  I’m a weenie.   Anyway, Sunday was my Mom’s birthday and we went to see Shakespeare’s Hamlet.  We arrived a few minutes early so we got a few pictures in with my point/shoot so the quality isn’t great.

This is a skirt that I’ve had since Thanksgiving and haven’t worn.  I bought it because it was $4.99. I just took the tag off.  I haven’t worn it because it had baggy pockets on the side that just made everything look wide.  I finally got the brilliant idea to remove the pockets with a seam ripper.

I love it now! I kinda wanted to wear it like 4 days in a row.  The print is just small enough and I think it’ll be great in fall too!

Top: (worn backwards) Forever 21

Skirt: PacSun

Earrings: Forever 21

Bracelet: Vintage from Mom

Belt: Forever 21

Heels: Payless (years ago)

Boot: Husband’s from Cavenders (he just HAD to get his foot in there!)

I’m really gonna try to post a few more outfits…

What do you think? Do you actually wanna see them?
